A pre-eminent stone staircase designer, Ian Knapper is a rare breed – but his dedication to the craft of stonemasonry is only part of the story. In the true sense of ‘learning the trade’, Ian’s apprenticeship started with a hammer and chisel and a piece of Portland stone. It was Bath College and the year was 1990. Along with developing stonemasonry theory, geometry, practical drawing and template making, Ian’s creative skills were starting to be honed. Few people knew at that time that this modest stonemason was starting to carve out an award-winning career. The passion and the expectation were building.
Fast forward to today. Ian’s unassuming modesty has not changed but his passion for design excellence and originality has grown beyond measure. This passion for interior design and designer staircases has resulted in an uncanny ability to create the most stunning and desirable works of art in stone imaginable.
The mastermind behind all of our stone staircases, Ian has experience working with some of the most prestigious heritage properties and period staircases in the UK. More recently, we are typically tasked with creating bespoke contemporary staircases in natural stone. Real stone staircases have an air of magnificence that you simply cannot achieve with other materials such as wood, and can be shaped and honed in a huge variety of styles and finishes to stunning effect.
This gives you almost limitless options to create a solid stone staircase that is completely unique and completely ‘you’. Working with you pragmatically at every stage from planning, design, 3D modelling, stone choice and production, installation and customer care we ensure that all elements are considered when creating your bespoke stone staircase.
To create our designer stone staircases, inspiration is drawn from a combination of age-old construction techniques and modern day engineering methods carefully balanced to produce real stone stairs in both period and modern styles. This passion, commitment and appreciation for modern and traditional masonry has seen Ian Knapper pioneer designs and groundbreaking stonemasonry techniques which were previously thought impossible to achieve, including a magnificent floating central staircase.
Over the course of Ian’s career as a staircase designer, he has perfected a variety of spiral, cantilever and curved staircases.
